The last fifteen years of my work, or of my career, have been marked by a refusal on my part to claim my position as an ‘artist’, I consider myself more as a film maker (the English translation seeming the most fitting to me), video maker or, albeit with reluctance, as an author. These statuses have never been wholly accurate or in line with the films that I make, nor with my videos, which has led me to think about my future as a videomaker, filmmaker, etc.. At the same time certain trends in contemporary art advocate more and more a measure of transversality in these areas in which I work. There seem to be many artists who are partial to using film, video and sound to highlight one aspect, but with the exclusion of all other such media. These specific and generalized confusions of status lead me to turn to the status of the artist and dedicate myself to the work concerning the definition of that status, his physical, physiological, skill and expertise. ‘Painting Today’ is a complete account of my career as a painter, which boils down to just one painting, the one which is visible in the video. La pièce intitulée Peindre Aujourd'hui/ Painting Today, par exemple, est un compte rendu de ma carrière de peintre, qui se résume à ce jour à un seul tableau, celui qui est visible dans la vidéo. http://www.davidkidman.com/
