Claude Chabrol, who was open to and intrigued by the odd, long-haired, black-clad « leftist » in Enard, challenged him : what could Enard possibly manage to make on the set of Chabrol’s Dr. Popaul ? On Chabrol’s request, Patrice Enard then brought his keen 16mm auteur eye onto the set and - all the while playing as an extra in the film’s cemetery scenes - took it upon himself to observe this “different” cinema in the making in a different manner… and deconstruct it.
